Note: If you’ve never read Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, but plan to some day and don’t want things spoiled for you, in my chapter posts there could be spoilers.
Calcifer chuckled. “I’ve never seen anyone got rid of so fast!” he said. – Howl’s Moving Castle
It was as simple as Howl said. Every day Sophie went out and cut many flowers. Of course, the thousands of flowers were thanks to magic. If only it were really that simple. But I think it would take the fun out of growing things. You know, planting a seed and waiting to see it pop up from the dirt. I think that is fun. But if you’re running a business, magic would make things a lot simpler, and probably cheaper too.
And it seems Howl is after his nephew’s school teacher. She didn’t really seem to want him though. But you know Howl, he never gives up. I’m sure no to him just means try harder.
The flower shop became very popular. I would say Sophie definitely had a good idea then.
Sophie thought she was completely happy working in the flower shop. And she is happy, but not completely. She thought maybe it was because no one recognized her. And that’s why she didn’t visit her sisters; Sophie was worried they wouldn’t recognize her. As you know, she no longer looks as she once did.
And there are other things that Sophie thinks that could be causing her not to be completely happy. But I don’t think it is any of them either.
And wouldn’t you know it? There is that scarecrow again. It’s hopping through Market Chipping. Sophie is not happy about that. She kept saying to herself “you can’t find us.” and “hop away quick.” And it did. Its speed picked up. And Sophie feels miserable. She knows it has to be with being the eldest. She set out to seek her fortune and ended up right back where she started. I imagine that mustn’t feel very good. I know it is no longer a hat shop, but she still ended up back in the same shop she thought she was spend her life in. And on top of that, she is still old.
Surprisingly, the teacher Howl is after stops in. She says she is only in encouraging Howl in hopes of getting some news of her fiance. Well, I guess Howl is the one being used this time, huh? Sophie had a bit of a hard time getting her out of the castle.
Sophie realizes she wasn’t very nice and that she came into the castle in much the same way. Sophie was definitely not in a good mood. Something is really bugging her I think. Perhaps in the next chapter it will be explained what exactly is bugging her.
